Route 46 ties Route 29 to Route 45 in eastern Johto. Early on, only its southern portion below a line of jumpable ledges can be explored; the upper section is reached either through Dark Cave or by descending the one-way Route 45 from Blackthorn City. Entering via Dark Cave demands at least three Badges, since Generation II requires Rock Smash, obtained after clearing the Sudowoodo from Route 36, while Generation IV requires Strength to push through the cave.
