Trainers in Black and White take their first steps onto Route 1 alongside Cheren and Bianca, following its tree-lined eastern path north out of Nuvema Town toward Accumula Town through low-level tall grass. Once Surf is learned, steps near the grass lead down to the sea, and traveling west along the water opens the route's second half, a stretch of dark grass ending at a gate to Route 17. In Black and White, that western section holds far stronger opponents and wild Pokémon, while in the sequels the whole route is post-game content at high levels.
