Route 44 is a short, simple stretch of northern Johto running from Mahogany Town to the Ice Path, forking around two quiet ponds where trainers wait to battle. Its lone grass patch is easy to skip, yet the local wildlife is unusual for the region, with Remoraid appearing nowhere else in Johto, and the right radio station can lure Pokémon from distant regions. In Generation II the route stays closed until the player holds seven Johto Badges; HeartGold and SoulSilver instead open it after Team Rocket falls at the Goldenrod Radio Tower.
