Ledges and a small pond define Route 31, a short piece of central Johto between Violet City and Route 30, with Dark Cave's western entrance on its eastern side. Beside the pond dozes a man who matters later on: delivering the Mail attached to a Spearow handed out by a guard at the Route 35 gate earns TM50 (Nightmare) in the Generation II games and, in Generation IV, TM44 (Rest).
