Pallet Town, a small settlement in southwestern Kanto, is where the player and their rival begin their journeys in the Kanto-based games. Professor Oak's Laboratory occupies the southeast corner, where new Trainers choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle and fight their first battle against their rival. The player's house is also here, and talking to Mom after leaving town fully heals the party. Route 1 leads north toward Viridian City, while Route 21, a water route, runs south to Cinnabar Island.
